TOUR #1028 - THE GREAT PACIFIC NORTHWEST:
June 26 - July 11, 2010
DAY 1 – KENTUCKY / ILLINOIS / ST. LOUIS: We board our luxury motorcoach early this morning and head for the state of Kentucky. Everyone is excited about the next 16 days, which will include some of the most beautiful and fascinating sights in the U.S. Horace Greeley once wrote, “Go West Young Man, Go West”. This afternoon puts us in sight of the steel structure marking St. Louis as the "Gateway to the West". We will have a picture stop at the Gateway Arch. After a visit to the Gateway Arch, our first overnight stop will be St. Charles, also known as the “Gateway to the West”.

DAY 2 – INDEPENDENCE, MO / SIOUX CITY: This morning we continue our journey westward through the farmlands of Missouri. We’ll have a picture stop at the home of Harry S. Truman in Independence, Missouri. After lunch, we enter the state of Kansas and travel north along the Missouri River to Sioux City, Iowa.

DAY 3 – MITCHELL CORN PALACE / BADLANDS / RAPID CITY: This morning we will enter the southwest corner of the state of Minnesota and head west. The famous Corn Palace is next on our list. The Corn Palace is newly decorated each year with 3,000 bushels of corn, grains and grasses, creating scenic murals. We bid farewell to Mitchell and travel across the state of South Dakota and through the Badlands National Park, a multicolored wasteland of weirdly formed gullies, canyons, ridges and spires. Leaving the badlands, our next stop will be Wall Drug!  It was here the Husteads made a fortune advertising free ice water to tourists in 1936. You may wish to roam the streets of this old western town of Wall, South Dakota. We’ll spend the night in the Rapid City, SD area.

DAY 4 – MOUNT RUSHMORE / BIG HORN MOUNTAINS / CODY RODEO: To understand Mt. Rushmore, you must first understand Gutzon Borglum, who began work on the project in 1927. The Rushmore-Borglum Story is told through newsreel films narrated by Lowell Thomas, Borglum sculptures and paintings, and numerous displays. Now you are ready for Mt. Rushmore, our National Memorial. Here the faces of four great presidents-Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt-stand out on a 6,000-foot  mountain. The faces, each 60 feet high, took 14 years to carve and were completed in 1941. Later we make our way through the Big Horn Mountains. The land here is rich with grass and ideal for grazing livestock. For years rustling and boundary disputes caused tension in the area. We arrive in Cody, named after the dashing frontiersman, Buffalo Bill Cody, by late afternoon. Cody is a fun town filled with history. In the evening, weather permitting, we will do the Cody Rodeo (included), a colorful event you will not soon forget. Our overnight stop will be in Cody, Wyoming.

DAY 5  YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK: This morning we head west through the oldest and best known of all our National Parks, the beautiful Yellowstone National Park. As we leave Cody and enter the Park, watch for grizzly bear, elk, moose, antelope, even buffalo, all are abundant in this area. Yellowstone, America’s first national park, is a world of wonderful sights: hot springs, geysers, boiling pots, plunging waterfalls, multicolored canyons, mud volcanoes, rivers and streams, mountains and forests, and countless species of plants and wildlife, from delicate flowers to the well known bison. A scenic drive through the park shows them off, and how could we forget the most famous sight of them all – Old Faithful – erupting. The scenery today has been Spectacular! Our overnight stop will be near Bozeman, MT.

DAY 6 – MONTANA’S BIG SKY / HELENA / SPOKANE, WASHINGTON: Today our journey continues under the Big Sky Country of Montana through Bozeman en route to Helena. We ride to the top of the Needle for a spectacular view of the city. On a clear day you can view Mt.
